In a world with limited research or understanding of ME, it can feel like you’re oscillating between a cacophony of options that helped someone else at some time (various drugs, therapies and techniques) and an absence of focused support for you (the day to day lack of interest from doctors leads to a sense of hopelessness).

It’s either ‘this miracle cure transformed my life’ or ‘almost no one recovers so deal with it yourself’.

The one consistency is the lack of clarity on what to do next.

I go through phases where i’m keen to try things, and other times where i’m just trying to get by. I also know that if I have too many things to work on all at once, I end up doing none of them. It’s much better for me to focus on a few things and actually do them, than have an endless to-do list.

That leads to a helpful way to make decisions when it’s not clear what to do next, especially when there are many competing options and we’re overwhelmed.

Just ask yourself ‘what’s the next right thing to do?’

It might be that we should try a new therapy, or keep up our practice of a current one. It also might be that, right now, we need a hug, or support. Or a break, or to book a doctors appointment.

Let the rest go and just take the next step.
